Land O’Licks, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing the euthanasia of companion animals in the state of Minnesota, will be holding a workshop to help pet owners prepare their dogs and cats for the arrival of a new baby. The workshop will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2013, from 3-5 p.m. at Woof Central, 6315 Penn Ave. S., Richfield, MN.
“Too often, new parents feel that they must make a difficult choice between the health and safety of their new babies and that of their dogs and cats,” says Land O’Licks Vice President Steve Thielbar, “We’re offering resources to help prepare pets for the arrival of a new baby, so that families can stay together and make a smooth transition as a new life enters the house.”
To do this, Land O’Licks recommends preparing pets as early as possible. This includes but is not limited to work on replacing quantity of time together with quality of time, making needed changes to pets’ living quarters, and evaluating and addressing any potential problem behaviors.
The workshop will feature Grant Gugisberg, DVM, from Parkview Cat Clinic, to talk to attendees about special considerations for preparing cats for the arrival of a new baby. In addition to behavioral issues, Dr. Gugisberg will address concerns about toxoplasmosis, a parasitic disease that can be transmitted by ingesting an infected cats’ feces.
Certified Pet Trainer Kate Anders will provide a presentation from Dogs & Storks, an internationally renowned parent education program for expecting families with dogs. This presentation is provides attendees with the opportunity to learn basic dog body language, how to handle the homecoming, critical safety tips and much more.
Participants will be afforded the opportunity to ask questions of both of the presenters. Additionally, all attendees will receive a free copy of the American Humane Association's book, Pet Meets Baby.
Land O’Licks is requesting that all attendees’ pre-register by going to www.landolicks.org and clicking on “Events.” Registrants will be asked to pay a $15 donation to help cover costs, with a discount of $12 offered to Woof Central customers. Those who bring a donation of pet supplies will be entered to win a drawing to win prizes. The pet supplies will be donated to local rescues and shelters.
