New Port Richey man arrested for beating puppies to death with a shovel

David Lee Thompson remains in jail in lieu of $5,000 bond for charges of felony animal cruelty in the beating death of four puppies.

Just when you think there can't be more horrible animal abuse cases out there, another despicable crime rears its ugly head. David Lee Thompson, 21, of 10100 Jungle St. in New Port Richey, Fla. was arrested on Saturday and charged with felony animal cruelty for beating four tiny pit bull puppies to death with a shovel.

According to, Thompson was helping his friend move at a mobile home park located at 12151 Catalona Ave. when the man told Thompson his dog had recently given birth to puppies, and he could not afford to keep them.

Of course, for most people the appropriate action would have been to surrender the puppies to a local rescue or animal control shelter.

Instead, in a despicable act of animal cruelty, Thompson allegedly took a shovel from his truck and beat the puppies to death. He then buried them in a shallow grave.

A witness dug up the puppies and called authorities.

Thompson remains in Land O' Lakes Jail in lieu of a $5,000 bond.

Rest in peace tiny puppies. We hope you get justice.
