Aliyah Maria wins Violet Stake

Aliyah Maria captured the Violet Pace at Bamoral Sunday night.

Aliyah Maria knocked off nine rivals Sunday night en route to winning the $55,300 Violet Stake for ICF sophomore pacing fillies.

Harnessed by conditioner Roger Welch, and a recent purchase by owner Rocco Ruffolo, the daughter of Duneside Perch stopped the timer in 1:52.4 for driver Todd Warren.

“Going into the race I figured there was going to be plenty of action of up front and things worked out perfectly,” said Warren. “I thought I would be able to duck her early on and find live cover to bring us into contention. Even though they weren’t going quite as fast as I thought, things were setting up perfectly for this filly’s big closing kick.”

The super-sized filly utilized a :27.3 final quarter brush to best her nearest rival (Auniqueaquisition) by a length, while Dallas Jones picked up show money.

“I knew if I was within five or six lengths of the leader turning for home we would have a big shot,” Warren stressed. “I knew if I could just find a clear path to the wire I was going to have a big shot to reel in the leaders.”

The victory, the fourth of her brief career, pushed Aliyah Maria’s career earnings to $44,444. She now has 4-5-2 record in 16 lifetime starts.

Aliyah Maria is the second of three foals out of the Sportsmaster broodmare Maria Maria, and is a half-sister to the mare Bella Deona (by His Mattjesty) p,3,1:56.1 ($14,164), now five.
