Back in 1981, legendary actor James “Jimmy” Stewart went on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” to share his hobby: poetry. The piece that he read was titled "I’ll Never Forget a Dog Named Beau" about Stewart’s golden retriever.
Give a dog a warm place to lie his head; a bowl of fresh food and water and regular potty walk. Offer him toys smeared with peanut butter and the occasional play. There is one thing that these gifts cannot take away … the noise and the stress of the barks, cries and growls of other dogs in the shelter. Opposing this tension is the care and kindness of staff and temporary caregivers that wish only that today would be this dog’s last day.
That today he would be chosen from all the others. To be given a proper collar and leash. Be lead out to a warm car waiting to take him home to a warm bed, fresh food and water and a big yard for potty and play. The greatest gift would be waking up to you the next day.
You can donate, volunteer or foster, but the greatest difference today would be for you to come in for adoption.
Today is Valentine’s Day. Go to a shelter. Visit a rescue. Fall in love.
