Yet another horse was killed on the A127 after an earlier crash, on the same road, involved several cars and three horses with two being killed. The second car versus horse collision occurred later in the day at 8:35 p.m. This incident too place at the A132 Nevendon junction, which is near the earlier crash at Wickford.

In the evening accident, a black Renault crashed into the horse, killing it instantly and trapping a passenger with injuries in the car. It was necessary to close the road for about an hour to attend to the injured The road was closed for about an hour while the woman was freed and the horse’s body was taken away.

Several fire crews – Basildon, Rayleigh Weir and Wickford – came to assist during the rescue and cleanup at the scene. They were able to help the female passenger out of the car, put her on a spinal board and then move her via ambulance to Basildon Hospital.

Ricardo Latora who is a sub-officer at Basildon mentioned the close proximity of this accident and the earlier one. He said: "It was awful and happened a few hundred yards down the road from the earlier crash with three horses."

Inspector Dick Thomas from the Essex Police said that local police is reminding Basildon District horse owners about their responsibility under the Animal Act of 1971 that holds them responsible to care for their horses and prevent them from straying onto highways.

Thomas said,

The investigation into the causes of the collision with two horses around 6:00 a.m. and the second incident around 8:00 p.m. continues. That investigation will include the circumstances of how the horses came to be on the A127 and whether any offenses by the horse owners have been committed or not.

He continued,

Where the circumstances and evidence shows that horse owners have been negligent then Essex Police will seek to prosecute.

The first crash had spared a third horse. Perhaps that animal was not rounded up or confined properly and was still out and about when it got hit.
